The Spanish government expresses support for the World Youth Day

   Madrid, January 20, 2011 - in the morning the Presidential Minister of Spain Ramon Jauregui met the delegation of the World Youth Day (WYD) in Vatican to discuss different questions of their cooperation. The Spanish Government offered their support for the organization of the international meeting which will be the WYD in Madrid 16-21 August this year. For about 1.5 million people from all over the world are expected to arrive on the WYD.
   Today we have 240 thousands of young people around the world who are registered and want to participate in the WYD. 23 000 of them will come from the countries which are not included to the Schengen area, they are people especially from Latin America and Africa. Taking into the consideration the process of getting a visa, the Spanish Government decided to give to pilgrims free visas. Everyone will be able to take a visa according to the normal set of requirements.
   During the World Youth Day for about six thousand police officers will be responsible for the order and security of the participants. Overall, seven government departments cooperate in the organization of the WYD. The departments are as follows: Foreign Affairs, Labor, Culture, Home Affairs, Health, Development and the Cabinet of Ministers. The Department of Health has promised to provide air base of Cuatro Viyentos for the night vigil and for the Divine Liturgy with the participation of Holy Father in it on 20 and 21 August. The Culture Department in its turn has been exploring various proposals which deals with the broad representation of Madrid and Spanish culture to the participants of the WYD.
   Today’s morning meeting was attended by: Alberto Gasbarri, the travel coordinator of the Pope, Archbishop Renzo Fratini, the Papal Nuncio in Spain, Madrid, Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela , Bishop Caesar Franco, the coordinator of the World Youth Day; Yago de la Cierva, the executive director of the World Youth Day, and the Deputy of a Minister Soledad López Fernández.
   The meeting took place during the Alberto’s Gasbarri visit to Madrid. Gasbarri analyzed every single detail from the plan of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Spain. He also had the opportunity to meet the government officials and visit places where the major events of the WYD will be held.
