The text was written by the priest of St. Nicholas Joseph Mohr and the music was written by the organist Franz Gruber. The premier of the Anthem was performed at the same day on a solemn Christmas Liturgy.
According to one legend, the song that one can easily sing without music or by a guitar, was created in a hurry, because the mice had сrunched the church organ bellows.
